Let Them Be Kids

Let Them Be Kids is all volunteer non-profit organization created to build community capacity on the grassroots level, while building playgrounds, skate parks and fitness parks across Canada. These projects leave a legacy of community members who are inspired and better equipped to lay a strong foundation for a brighter tomorrow.

Sports Grounds Enhancement Project Phase 2 - Walking Trails

On June 19, 2010, the Sangudo community will once again come together to add some enhancements to the Sports Grounds. This year, the major project will be construction of the first phase of walking trails. Other projects being considered will be to add protective barriers to the top of the fences around Ball Diamonds #1 and #2, remove some dead trees, build stairs down to Ball Diamond #2, plant trees & shrubs, and do additional beautification projects.

The plans are being finalized and the committee would appreciate your help! A workbee has been planned for June 10 & 11 , 2010 starting at 9:00 am at the Arena. We require willing workers plus equipment such as skid steers, bob cats, flatbed trailers, and gravel trucks. If you are able to help, please contact David Loughridge 780-785-2763 or Carol Ohler 780-785-3700. We hope to see you there!

Sangudo Sports Grounds Enhancement and Beautification Projects

The Need... The Sangudo Sports Grounds is located in the beautiful Pembina River Valley. It is a vibrant recreational facility with an arena, ball diamonds, campground, race track and natural swimming area. It attracts many families and is in need of a safe, easily accessible playground. Hamlet beautification and a new skateboard park will also be valuable enhancements to the community.

The Activity... In one day volunteers will build a playground, a beach volley ball court, start a skateboard park, refurbish horseshoe pits and other existing structures, and complete various hamlet beautification projects. Subsequent phases include completion of the skateboard park, walking/biking/fitness trails and additional beautification projects.

The Impact... We are an Active, Creative and Engaged (ACE) community. We are all children at heart. Enhancing the Sports Grounds will bring recreational, social and play opportunities to children of all ages. In the process it will improve our quality of life and instill a greater sense of pride.

To The “Let Them Be Kids” Coordinators
I wish to extend my bouquets and appreciation for the work and effort that went into this project. From the onset, excitement for this venture was evident. The commendable effort at pre-advertising and solicitation for volunteer help produced a community in motion on June 20th, 2009. The final result is clearly visible throughout our hamlet. Thank you to all who worked so hard to build the program, build the playground, skateboard park and beach volleyball. And, to all who continue to keep the project areas maintained, thank you too! The beautification and enhancements do indeed portray the community spirit and work that went into it. I wish I could have been there to help.
A big effort was also shown behind the scenes. From the early stages of planning to completion, our coordinators for this project gave a great deal of time and effort voluntarily. You are truly valuable members of society. Thank you!
The generosity of the donators is equally valuable. Your compassion for letting kids be kids is duly noted. Thank you.
And to the food and beverage providers, I tip my hat. Your contribution has been boasted around town. Kudos to you!
Sincerely
Laurie C

Sangudo Youth Experience ‘Dot-mocracy’

Students at David Ovans Elementary School had an opportunity to experience ‘Dot-mocracy’.

As part of Sangudo’s ACE (Active Creative Engaged) Initiative, plans for a Sports Grounds Enhancement Project are well underway. The project includes, among many things, building a playground at Sangudo’s Sports Grounds.

Approximately 140 students at David Ovans Elementary were asked to help in the selection of the best items to include at the playground. The students were each given three dots. They used these dots to vote for their favourite pieces of playground equipment from a choice of approximately 75 different pieces. The ‘Rock Challenge Wall’ was the favourite choice, but other favourites included the “Floating Pod Bridge”, the “Stargate Curved Slide” and the “Overhead Wheel Bridge”.

The concept of Dot-mocracy was one that was shared by Ian Hill, volunteer CEO of Let Them Be Kids. This process teaches our kids about democracy - voting for a preferred choice. It also engages the youth so they will have ownership in the playground.
Shelly Starman, who facilitated the process said, “The children were very engaged and enthused and were happy to be involved. The teachers were also excited.” She also mentioned that a note went home with each student describing their involvement in choosing the equipment and inviting the whole family to become involved. That involvement could include being one of the 150+ volunteers to show up on June 20 to build the playground, skateboard park, walking trails, and other enhancements to the Sangudo Sports Grounds and Hamlet.

Sangudo Seven-Year-Old Begins Life of Philanthropy

Blake Starman just turned seven and yet he is determined to make a big difference in his community to help other children for generations to come. What a role model!

Since Blake’s mom is very involved in fundraising for a new playground, part of the Sangudo Sports Grounds Enhancement Project, he decided to donate his birthday money to ensure the playground become a reality. Blake presented his generous contribution to Lac Ste. Anne County Councillor, Lloyd Giebelhaus at the April 4th committee meeting of the Sports Grounds Enhancement Project.

Other community members are following Blake’s lead. A Sangudo couple are also finding easy ways to help their community. Normally, they treat each other to supper for their birthday celebrations. This year, that money has been donated toward to the Sports Grounds Enhancement Project. They said their enjoyment of a meal doesn’t last nearly as long as the pleasure they will receive by watching the youth play.

You can follow Blake’s lead by putting your time and money behind projects that you feel are worthy. The Sangudo Sports Grounds Enhancement Project is one of many valuable efforts taking place in our community. The Fallen Four Memorial Run is another. You won’t have to look hard to find ways that you, too, can be a philanthropist!
